Should Two-Piece Sets Be Sold Separately?

Updated: Aug 29, 2020

I’m becoming more and more of a fan of two-piece sets. I’m not just talking about two-piece swimsuits, I mean all two-piece outfits from jogging sets to skirt sets and co-ords. I'm a fan for a number of reasons. First, two-piece sets are versatile. Oftentimes, there are many color, print, and style options that allow you to mix and match pieces from the sets.

If you're not a biker shorts girl, you can opt for a set with pants, a skirt or skort to pair with your top. If you're not a fan of crop tops, you can purchase a set with a full length shirt. I love clothes that offer styling versatility.

Second, two-piece sets, whether you combine a top and shorts or a top and a skirt, can easily be dressed up or down. Whether you need an outfit for the office, a backyard party or for a day out running errands, two-piece sets have your back.

I don’t own too many two-piece sets but I'm ready to grow my collection, starting with swimsuits and biker short sets. The thing that gets in my way when searching for sets is the option to buy the items as a set versus as separate items.

Should Two-Piece Sets Be Sold Separately?

My vote is yes.

Sadly, I'm not a fan of sites that sell two-pieces as one item simply because that doesn't work for my body type. When sets are sold as one item it forces you to buy both the top and bottom pieces in the same size. That doesn't typically work our for curvy girls like me who are bottom heavy/pear shaped.

Honestly, what I'd really like is for brands to sell two-piece sets as one item for one price, but give us the option to select a size for both top and bottom pieces rather than one size for both pieces. Am I asking for too much?

I came across this article from The Concept Wardrobe that details characteristics of the pear shape body and how to dress it.

Pear shape bodies are smaller at the top and wider at the bottom, therefore I will always need a smaller size up top and a larger size for my bottom half. So, as a curvy girl I need the option to purchase my tops and bottoms as separate items so I can have my desired size at the top and bottom.

Two-piece sets that are sold as one are nice because you’re not spending as much money, (hopefully) getting two items for the price of one. Unfortunately I may be coming out of more money buying sets separately this way, but this doesn't bother me too much. I don’t mind paying extra for a good fit, but the cheapo in me doesn't want to pay an arm and a leg for each piece of a set either.

While I love them, brands like Fashion Nova, Shein, and Boohoo do not give you the option to purchase two-piece set items separately.

Torrid does a nice job of allowing you to purchase their two-piece swimsuits as separate, mix and match items, which I love. However, this seems to only be a thing among their swimsuits. I've reviewed two-piece sets on their site, and all other sets have been sold as one item for one price.

I’m still searching for more sites that will allow me to purchase two-piece sets separately.

If you know of any brands that sell two-piece sets separately, please share. Also what are your thoughts on two-piece sets. Do you like them or are they not really your cup of tea?

Do you think two-piece sets should be sold separately?
